Frances Austin 2007 Alumnus of the Year

Frances V. Owens Austin has been named Alumnus of the Year for 2007-2008. A 1960 graduate of South Carolina State with a degree in Library Science/BS (Education), Frances has been a member of the Washington, DC Alumni Chapter for 37 years and she has held the office of Recording Secretary. In a continuing effort to help others and SCSU, Frances established a scholarship that provides financial assistance to needy students, who major in consumer science at SCSU. This is a memorial to her daughter, Joyce V. Austin, a SCSU graduate. This scholarship has been in existence since 1988. Frances responded generously for many years to appeals by SCSU for financial contributions for various causes, including but not limited to, the heritage fund, purchase of band uniforms, annual scholarship gala, inaugural gift for the president, campus beautification, Tom Joyner fundraiser, and class reunion gift. Her Class of 1960 donated $35,000 during its 40th reunion. Frances is Life Member of SCSU National Alumni Association and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
